The best 18 hours

April 25, 2023 By webmaster scicu

SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez

L. Jeffrey Perez, Ph.D.
SCICU President and CEO

Message from SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez –

Last week we finished what I think are the best 18 hours at SCICU.

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 we held the SCICU Excellence In Teaching Awards Dinner at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Each campus names an award recipient who demonstrates the inspiring instruction and commitment to students for which SCICU member institutions are rightly known. Each recipient receives a framed award certificate and a $3,000 professional development grant and are recognized at a dinner in their honor.

What makes the SCICU Excellence In Teaching Awards Dinner so special is that it’s a family affair. Professors typically are recognized for their achievements at academic conferences that families and friends don’t attend. They’re warmly welcomed at our awards dinner – all the hard work that goes into the planning and execution pays off when we see the recipients’ guests smiling broadly and beaming with pride.

Just a few hours later SCICU participated in Higher Education Day at the S.C. State House. About 90 students and staff from SCICU member institutions joined those from public universities and technical colleges to thank legislators for their support of need-based aid “the Tuition Grants Program gives students the opportunity to attend the private college or university that best meets their academic goals and career aspirations.

Travelling early in the morning from all over the state, the students, our best ambassadors for higher education, by 9 a.m. had fanned out over the Blatt and Gressette legislative office buildings and State House wearing their college colors and large red “Thanks for my Tuition Grant!” stickers. They met with legislators who had previously received thousands of handwritten letters of thanks from our students for the Tuition Grants Program. Among the 12,000 Tuition Grant recipients are those from every county in South Carolina.

The students from all three higher education sectors gathered in the balcony of the House of Representatives to be recognized from the floor by Rep. Tim McGinnis (R-Horry), the chair the House Higher Education Subcommittee of the Education and Public Works Committee.

The students then moved to the steps of the State House to meet with Gov. Henry McMaster and receive a proclamation declaring April 19, 2023 as Higher Education Day in South Carolina. Each sector had a student speak on its behalf. Kylah Montgomery, a junior at Benedict College, spoke eloquently of the importance her Tuition Grant has played making her college education possible. Gov. McMaster graciously took the time to chat with the students and join them for countless photos.

By noon the students had grabbed their box lunches and were heading back to campus. In just 18 hours we saluted great professors, celebrated with their families, gathered with inspired students who met with, and impressed, our state’s leaders.

My deepest thanks to the campus staffs, and our team at SCICU, for making this great day happen.

April 19 Joint Higher Education Day – expressing thanks for need-based grants and scholarships

April 25, 2023 By webmaster scicu

Gov. Henry McMaster addressed students from public and private colleges and universities at the second annual Joint Higher Education Day April 19 at the S.C. State House.

Gov. Henry McMaster (at podium) addressed students from public and private colleges and universities at the second annual Joint Higher Education Day April 19 at the S.C. State House.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Thanking members of the General Assembly and Gov. Henry McMaster for their continued strong support of need-based financial aid, including S.C. Tuition Grants, was the primary mission of more than 100 students and campus staffers at the State House during Higher Education Day on April 19.

“The S.C. Tuition Grants program helps more than 12,000 South Carolina resident students make the decision to stay in the state and attend the private college or university that best meets their educational needs,” said SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez. “We are grateful for the continued commitment of the governor and General Assembly to need-based aid for in-state students. While other states have cut need-based aid for higher education, South Carolina’ s increasing investment in the Tuition Grants program supports development of the state’s future leaders and fuels economic growth.”

The April 19 Higher Education Day marked the second annual joint advocacy effort of South Carolina resident students attending SCICU member private colleges and universities, public two- and four-year institutions, and the technical college system. Their combined message was clear: “Thanks for need-based grants and scholarships supporting S.C. residents!”

Higher Education Day student participants hailed from the S.C. Upstate to the Lowcountry and all points in between. SCICU’s participating colleges ranged from North Greenville University in the mountains to Charleston Southern University on the coast. Students and staff from 16 of SCICU’s 21 member campuses traveled to Columbia to show support in the April 19 event. SCICU member institutions attending Higher Education Day included Allen University, Anderson University, Benedict College, Charleston Southern University, Claflin University, Columbia College, Columbia International University, Erskine College, Furman University, Limestone University, Morris College, North Greenville University, Presbyterian College, Spartanburg Methodist College, Voorhees University, and Wofford College.

Students started the day visiting their respective members of the General Assembly in their Blatt and Gressette offices prior to the start of the House and Senate sessions. Student advocates also enjoyed impromptu meetings with members of the General Assembly on the second floor lobby before the House and Senate went into session at 10 a.m.

During the House’s 10 a.m. session, student advocates gathered in the balcony for recognition by the floor and Rep. Tim McGinnis’ (R- Horry, chair of the House Higher Education subcommittee) reading of H. 4288, a concurrent resolution for recognizing April 19, 2023 as South Carolina Higher Education Day. Students received a rousing round of applause from House members.

Joint Higher Education Day culminated with presentations by three student speakers representing public institutions, private colleges and universities, and technical colleges. The speakers explained the personal value of state-based financial aid in affording the college of their choice and reducing student loan debt.

Lander University’s Alayna Harding presented on behalf of public two- and four-year colleges and universities. Kristen Reed, a student at Midlands Technical College, spoke on behalf of the technical college system.

The final student speaker, Benedict College’s Kylah Montgomery, a junior majoring in studio art, represented SCICU member colleges and universities. She explained why Tuition Grants have been an important part of her financial aid during her three years at Benedict.

Please read the transcript of Kylah Montgomery’s entire Higher Education Day presentation and remarks here.

Benedict College’s Kylah Montgomery: ‘Thanks for my Tuition Grant!’

April 25, 2023 By webmaster scicu

Kylah Montgomery shared with Gov. McMaster, members of the General Assembly, fellow S.C. higher education students, and the media the importance of the Tuition Grants program to her education at Benedict College.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Kylah Montgomery, a Benedict College studio art major, was SCICU ‘s featured student speaker at the April 19 Joint Higher Education Day at the S.C. State House. She shared with Gov. McMaster, fellow students at S.C. ‘s private and public colleges, and the media why Tuition Grants are so important to her.

Please read the text of Kylah ‘s Higher Education Day speech:

“Good morning, I ‘m Kylah Moreland Montgomery and I ‘m a junior at Benedict College, the HBCU that put the BC in HBCU! I am majoring in studio art and minoring in art history. I am excited to be with you today representing Benedict College and SCICU ‘s 20 other member colleges and universities.

More than 12,000 students at these 21 schools are Tuition Grants recipients. Tuition Grants help South Carolina residents attend and afford the private college of their choice. Tuition Grants have been an important part of my financial aid for my first three years at Benedict. Our President, Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, has worked hard to ensure that my classmates and I have every opportunity to complete our degree with as little debt as possible. The South Carolina Tuition Grants application process is simple and has without a doubt aided us in making a degree more affordable. Unlike loans, the South Carolina Tuition Grants are a gift and do not have to be repaid. This has helped me to minimize student loan debt and alleviate some of the financial burdens for my family. The Tuition Grants also gave me the opportunity to choose an HBCU that was the right fit for my artistic gifts and academic goals.

On behalf of all Tuition Grants recipients, we thank you and urge South Carolina to increase its support and look forward to celebrating Higher Education Day! Thank you! And now, please allow me to introduce one of the champions of South Carolina higher education needs-based aid, including the Tuition Grants program. It is a great day in South Carolina, and please join me in welcoming Governor Henry McMaster.”

Benedict College's Kylah Montgomery, SCICU's featured student speaker for Higher Education Day, introduced and welcomed Gov. Henry McMaster to the podium for the Higher Education Day Proclamation Ceremony.
