Erskine College 2023 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award Winner - Dr. Keith Timms

Erskine College’s 2023 SCICU Excellence in Teaching award winner is associate professor of music Dr. Keith D. Timms. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University (Winchester, Va.) a Master of Arts from Furman University, and a Bachelor of Science Music Education from Erskine College.

As Erskine’s director of choral activities, Timms conducts the Erskine choirs and teaches classes in Choral Music Pedagogy and Literature, Conducting, and Church Music Methods and Materials. In addition to instructional responsibilities, Timms chairs the Music and Art Departments.

Before joining the Erskine faculty in 2014, Timms worked as a South Carolina high school choir teacher for 30 years. He frequently serves as a clinician, adjudicator, and consultant for numerous national, regional, and state choral and vocal festivals, musical events, and school districts. Timms’ choirs have performed in multiple countries, and most recently performed in Denmark and Lithuania as a part of a musical mission trip.

To accommodate the diverse ability and experience levels present in his choirs, Timms utilizes four modalities of learning within each rehearsal: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. By recognizing, embracing, and utilizing these multiple modalities of learning possessed by the members, effective and artistic performances are possible for both novice and experienced singers.

Timms’ professional memberships include the National Association for Music Education, the American Choral Directors Association, the College Music Society, the South Carolina Music Educators Association, and the South Carolina Choral Directors Association, where he previously held the offices of president, treasurer, and membership chair.
