SPARTANBURG, SC (courtesy smcsc.edu) — Dr. Mark W. Gibbs, professor of religion and philosphy since 1999 at Spartanburg Methodist College, started responsibilities as SMC’s new Provost on January 2. President Scott Cochran announced Dr. Gibbs’ new role on December 18. Dr. Gibbs replaces Dr. Anita K. Bowles, executive vice president for Academic Affairs, who retired in December after 16 years at SMC.
During his time at SMC, Dr. Gibbs has served as the dean of instruction, chair of the Humanities Division, director of Academic Services, and interim vice-president for Academic Affairs.
“Dr. Gibbs is a favorite professor among students and a valuable member of my leadership team,” said President Cochran. “He’s an active voice for the faculty and an irreplaceable asset to the college. I’m happy that he has agreed to expand his service to the SMC community.”
As provost, Dr. Gibbs will serve as SMC’s senior academic officer with responsibility for supporting the faculty and staff in pursuit of distinction in teaching and learning, innovation in curriculum development, and fostering opportunities for professional development. Dr. Gibbs received his B.A. in Religion from Montreat College, his M.A. in New Testament Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Wales. He has also completed post-graduate work in philosophy at Iowa State University and Holy Apostles College and Seminary.
