A member of the Presbyterian College faculty for 38 years, Mark Raymond Anderson is the college’s recipient of the 2024 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award. He holds a Master in Fine Arts in painting from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, an M.A. in professional counseling from South University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Art, Art Education, and Psychology from Asbury College (Wilmore, Kentucky).
When Anderson joined the PC faculty in 1986, he was the only Art professor in the college’s department of Fine Arts. Over the years, he oversaw the development of an expanded Art curriculum, hired new faculty colleagues, and worked on the growth of the program to include a full complement of Studio and Art History courses. During his tenure at PC, Anderson has taught beginning and advanced courses in Painting, Design, Drawing, Life Drawing, Printmaking, Digital Photography & Culture, Art Therapy, Art Appreciation, Media and Society, and a range of Art History courses from Ancient through Modern Art.
For five decades, Anderson has also maintained an active studio practice, refining his approach to expressive landscape and figurative painting as well as conceptually more complex narrative works that draw on symbolism and depth psychology.
Anderson is also a Licensed Professional Counselor and together with his wife, Susan, a board certified art therapist, they operate Creative Insight Counseling & Consultation in Spartanburg.
