Newberry College’s 2024 recipient of the SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award is Keith William Ringer, professor of practice in Political Science, Public, and Non-Profit Administration. He holds a Master in Public Administration degree from the University of South Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from Newberry College.
A member of the Newberry faculty for more than three decades, Ringer has taught a wide variety of courses, including Introduction to Public and Non-Profit Administration, Public Budgeting, Public and Non-Profit Personnel Management, Non-Profits and NGOs, U.S. Government, and more.
Outside Newberry College, Ringer’s professional experience includes 30 years as program manager with the S.C. Department of Education and five years as executive director of the non-profit S.C. Purchasing Alliance.
The development and growth of students is paramount to Ringer. He uses his decades of experience in the public sector to provide students practical application of theories presented in the classroom.
Ringer has conducted research on the budgetary process in South Carolina State Government, specifically the effect of the leadership of the House Ways and Means Committee on that process. This research is housed in the South Carolina Political Collections-Hollings Special Collections Library at the University of South Carolina.
He has been a peer reviewer of the book, First Choice, A Purchasing Manual. He has also been featured in USA Today, television, and local radio stations.
