Converse University 2023 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award Winner - Dr. Mary Carlisle

Dr. Mary E. Carlisle, associate professor of art, is Converse University’s 2023 SCICU Excellence in Teaching award recipient. She holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Management with an emphasis in Creativity and Innovation and a Master of Science in Arts Administration, both from Drexel University (Philadelphia, Pa.). Carlisle also earned two fine arts degrees in Studio Art, including an MFA from Lesley University (Cambridge, Mass.) and a BFA from Converse University.

Carlisle brings over a decade of experience in various capacities in arts administration, including program development, marketing, and event management for arts nonprofits with an educational focus. Her speaking engagements at national and regional conferences include the Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE) and the Southeastern Arts Leadership Educators (SALE). Carlisle’s scholarly research examines workplace creativity practices and the fine arts’ impact on building career skills at the collegiate level.

Carlisle currently serves as assistant chair of Art and Design and as the program coordinator for Converse’s Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art program and the Minor in Arts Administration. She teaches a wide variety of courses, including introductory courses for incoming students and newly-declared art majors, a variety of ceramics studio art classes, courses in arts administration, and the senior Art and Design seminar. Carlisle actively collaborates with other Converse faculty in the development of interdisciplinary honors courses. Associate professor of Chemistry Will Case, Converse’s 2017 Excellence In Teaching awardee, and Carlisle developed a course studying the chemical concepts inherent in ceramics glazing, and SCICU funded the students’ research project associated with the course.

Outside the classroom Carlisle is an accomplished artist whose studio practice is centered around exploring alternative processes in clay. She enjoys taking her work into the community through hands-on workshops and interactive exhibits.
