Columbia International University 2023 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award Winner - Dr. Michael Naylor

Dr. Michael Naylor, professor of Bible, is the 2023 SCICU Excellence In Teaching award recipient for Columbia International University. He holds a Ph.D. in New Testament and early Christian history from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), two master’s degrees – a Master of Arts and a Master of Divinity – from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, Ill.), and a Bachelor of Arts from Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, Ill.).

Naylor joined the CIU faculty in 2012. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Bible and Greek, supervises Ph.D. students, and directs the CIU Honors Program. Naylor’s teaching interests include working with Koine Greek and teaching a variety of New Testament books, which draws on his doctoral research that focused upon the depiction of Jesus in the Book of Revelation. His scholarly research examines historical, cultural, and religious contexts of early Christianity, the use of the Old Testament Scripture by early Christians, and the development and expression of early Christian theology.

Naylor’s professional experience outside the classroom includes serving as the New Testament Book Review Editor for the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. His professional memberships include the Evangelical Theological Society, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the Institute for Biblical Research.

Before embarking on doctoral studies, Naylor served as a youth director, worship leader, and associate pastor. This depth of experience serves him well, as he delights in seeing students discover new insights into the Bible and develop their skills and passion for understanding scripture and theology.

Naylor’s scholarly publications include a monograph entitled Complexity and Creativity: John’s Presentation of Jesus in the Book of Revelation and a number of essays and articles dealing with early Christian literature, history, and theology.
