Dr. Kirk Hansen, professor of History, is Spartanburg Methodist College’s recipient of the 2021 SCICU Excellence In Teaching award. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Dundee (Scotland). Hansen received a B.A. and an M.A. in History, both conferred by Bob Jones University. Hansen’s dissertation focused on Jewish integration and attitudes towards militarism in Scotland, 1898-1932.
Spartanburg Methodist students and faculty alike recognize Hansen’s commitment to excellence and his heart for teaching. He is the recipient of multiple campus awards, including the 2020 Archie Vernon and Margaret Wannamaker Huff Faculty Award, the 2019 Exemplary Teaching Award from General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, and the 2017 Student Government Association Founder’s Day Faculty Award.
Dr. Hansen gives selflessly to the life of Spartanburg Methodist College with particular attention to student success. “Kirk is the kind of professor who is just as likely to load up a van to see a historic site as he is to publish in his field,” said SMC Interim Provost Kris Neely. “His commitment to effective teaching is never diminished by his own scholarly work. We know his continued research will directly impact the quality and dynamism of his teaching. Teaching in a learning community with colleague like Kirk is an inspiring gift.”
