Dr. Alex Richardson, chair of the department of English and communications, is Limestone University’s 2020 recipient for the SCICU Excellence In Teaching award. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi Center for Writers with specializations in 20th century poetry and creative writing. Dr. Richardson also earned an M.A. in renaissance literature and a B.A. in English, both from the University of South Carolina.

A twenty-year veteran member of the Limestone faculty, Dr. Richardson teaches courses in creative writing, literature, film studies, and composition. In addition to his classroom leadership, Dr. Richardson serves as faculty advisor for the Limestone men’s tennis team. He has served two terms on the faculty development committee.

Dr. Richardson’s writing and scholarly work has received extensive honors. In 2009, he was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholar award, which allowed him to teach courses in American culture at the University of Madeira, Portugal. Dr. Richardson’s poetry is widely published in literary journals and anthologies. Literary journals featuring his writing include Rattle, Barrow Street, Free Lunch, The Southeast Review, POEM, and many others. Anthologies featuring Dr. Richardson’s work include A Millennial Sampler of South Carolina Poetry and The Southern Poetry Anthology. His book, Porch Night on Walnut Street, was published by Plainview Press in 2007.

A passion for active teaching and an abiding commitment to supporting students as they develop critical thinking and language skills are the touchstones of Dr. Richardson’s twenty-five-year career in the classroom. He is a three-time recipient of the Fullerton Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award.
