Dr. Brian S. Vogt, professor of Chemistry, is Bob Jones University’s 2024 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award recipient. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Bob Jones University.
Vogt joined the BJU faculty in 1983 and from 2007 to 2023 served as head of the Department of Chemistry and Physics. He has effectively taught a wide range of courses, including General Chemistry, Principles of Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
Vogt is passionate about the key role that laboratory experiences play in the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills. He has designed and written laboratory curricula and manuals to maximize student learning and success. He continually challenges and inspires his students to think and write like the scientists they aspire to be.
Dr. Gary Weier, Bob Jones University provost, states, “Dr. Vogt is known as a dedicated mentor who helps his students reach their full potential, both in matters of academics and life. His students consistently express appreciation for his probing questions that guide them through the scientific process to obtain the answers.”
Beyond the classroom, Vogt has participated for many years as a lead faculty member in the Summer Institute in Teaching Science held annually on BJU’s campus. He has also worked as a civilian chemist for the U.S. Air Force. His work there ultimately led to a U.S. patent on which he is listed as a co-inventor.
