The 2024 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award recipient for Benedict College is Dr. Desirée C. Bygrave, assistant professor of Psychology. She holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Research Neuropsychology, both from Howard University. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Delaware School of Nursing. Bygrave earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Voorhees University (then Voorhees College).
An extensively published scholar, Bygrave’s most recent publications include “Psychosocial risk, subclinical CVD, and brain volumes examining sex disparities in dementia risk” (Innovation in Aging, December 2023).
Bygrave’s interdisciplinary approach to teaching integrates biological principles with psychology to provide students with a holistic understanding of the human mind. She focuses on creating dynamic and engaging learning environments. Her courses not only cover the foundations of psychology but also encourage students to explore the practical applications of psychological principles. One student described her teaching as “impressive, unique, refreshing, interactive and life-changing,” while another added that her class was one of the “best and most challenging” that she has ever taken. Still another student lauded her “strategic course layout” with the added value of “sincerity and generosity” that facilitates a stimulating academic atmosphere that fosters curiosity and critical thinking.
Dr. Bygrave integrates real-life experiences into classroom instruction using problem-based learning, multimedia, technology, advocacy, and simulations. Her courses offer students experiential learning opportunities to apply content knowledge through projects including Power to the Period, Senior Homies Project, 30 Days of Sexual Assault Awareness Month Project, the Tackle Hunger Campaign, and more.
