Dr. Fayaz Kabani, assistant professor and English department chair, is the Allen University 2024 SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award recipient. He holds a Ph.D. in English, a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and a bachelor’s degree in English, all from the University of South Carolina.
In his 10 years at Allen University, Kabani has taught a variety of classes including English Composition, Introduction to Literature, Public Speaking, Chaucer, Shakespeare, English Literature, Creative Writing, Advanced Composition, Sports Communication, and Feature Writing. Dr. Kabani’s teaching philosophy centers on being approachable and meeting students where they are while modeling academic rigor and curiosity. In addition to teaching, committee, and administrative duties, he has also coached the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge quiz bowl team for five years.
Kabani’s dissertation analyzed the social performance of masculinity in early modern England, looking specifically at the character of Prince Hal/King Harry in Shakespeare’s Second Tetralogy. He is currently working on a book chapter focusing on the conflicting notions of blood and nation in Shakespeare’s Henry V for the book series The Cultural History of Blood to be published by Bloomsbury. His current creative pursuits include writing poetry and drafting a screenplay adapting It’s a Wonderful Life to reflect the struggles of the millennial generation.
