Roger Riley, instructor of Emergency Management, is the 2021 recipient of the SCICU Excellence In Teaching Award for Voorhees College. Currently serving as the Barnwell County Emergency Management Director, Riley brings into the Voorhees classrooms nearly 30 years of significant emergency management experience, ranging from COVID-19 to hurricanes. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina.
Riley’s depth of experience provides Voorhees students with significant views into real-world crisis management and opportunities for experiential learning. Voorhees students learned coordination and leadership first-hand while participating in the Barnwell Exercise Ardent Sentry 13 with the National Guard. Riley led the operation involving 300 local and military participants and 100 student volunteer participants.
Outside the classroom, Riley also chairs the local Emergency Food and Shelter FEMA Board and is a member / past president of the S.C. Emergency Management Association. He is a South Carolina Certified Risk Manager and a Certified Emergency Manager. Riley is National Incident Management Certified and has completed the FEMA Professional Development Series. He also holds certifications as a Radiological Emergency Preparedness Evaluator, Modular Emergency Response Radiological Transportation Trainer, and licensed extra class amateur radio operator.
