SCICU is pleased to announce that Wofford Class of 1990 graduate Rep. G. Murrell Smith, Jr. (R-Sumter) has been elected by the House Ways and Means Committee as its next chair. Rep. Smith also chairs the House Ethics Committee. He previously served on the Wofford Alumni Executive Committee (2003-2005).
Morris Class of 1975 graduate Rep. J. David Weeks, who also serves as chair of his alma mater’s Board of Trustees, has been appointed to the Ways and Means Committee by House Speaker Jay Lucas (R-Darlington). Weeks was first elected to the House in 2001, and is the immediate past chair of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus. He also currently serves as vice chair of the House Ethics Committee.
At the same December 5 meeting at which Rep. Smith was elected Ways and Means chair, Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D-Orangeburg), SCICU’s 2017 Legislative Champion, was elected first vice-chair. Cobb-Hunter is the longest-serving member of the House. She is the president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.
