It is my privilege to serve as the President and CEO of the South Carolina Independent College and Universities, Inc. (SCICU). Since our founding in 1953, SCICU has been dedicated to representing 21 independent colleges and universities, each with its own unique historical, cultural, and often faith-based background. Our membership also includes five historically black colleges and universities.
SCICU supports South Carolina’s independent nonprofit colleges and universities by strengthening member institutions through collaboration, governmental advocacy, fundraising, and public engagement. We strive to ensure that every student can choose, afford, and earn an independent college education that aligns with their personal values, professional and social aspirations, and learning preferences.
For the past two centuries, private colleges have been supporting the Palmetto State. This commitment has both expanded and deepened. Today, SCICU members are committed to providing a diverse array of educational opportunities. With over 43,000 undergraduate students enrolled annually, our institutions offer traditional degree programs as well as accelerated and evening programs for adults. Nearly one-quarter of South Carolina’s students attend SCICU institutions, with seventy-five percent being South Carolina residents and nearly half of the enrollment comprising minority students. Our member institutions are all accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).
We take pride in the significant role our colleges and universities play in enhancing educational choices and opportunities, strengthening South Carolina’s economy, and preparing students to thrive in today’s global knowledge economy. Our commitment is to invest in the next generation of leaders who possess the knowledge and skills to be ethical, successful, and productive members of a free society.
Cordially,
Robert B. Lloyd, Ph.D.
President and CEO
South Carolina Independent College and Universities, Inc.
