Voorhees faculty member selected as a USATF subcommittee chairperson

March 14, 2021 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

DENMARK, S.C. (courtesy voorhees.edu) — Voorhees College faculty member Calvin T. Williams, Jr. was recently named chair of the USA Track and Field (USATF) Masters Inclusion subcommittee, where he will serve for the next four years.

According to usatf.org, the USATF Masters Track and Field (MTF) and Long Distance Running Division consists of local, regional, national, and international competition opportunities for athletes 35 years of age and older. In addition, there is a “sub-masters” category for athletes 30 to 34 years of age.

Williams said it is an honor having been chosen to serve on the MTF Inclusion subcommittee. “As the world evolves to reflect a more inclusive culture, I am excited for the opportunity to contribute and effect change by fostering equitable participation in Master’s track and field, Williams said. “As a man of color, a young professor, and master’s athlete, I am allowed to inspire and influence change in those inspired by me.”

He added, “This role is a prime example of one word that has governed my life since a young age that is also part of the Voorhees College tagline- Believe, which is something else I hope to instill in those I inspire to reach and those that I come into contact.”

Williams is currently the assistant professor and program coordinator of sports management in the Department of Science, Technology, Health, and Human Services. He has been a member of the Voorhees College family since 2019.

He earned an associate’s degree in general education from Durham Technical Community College, a bachelor’s degree in public relations from North Carolina A&T State University, and a master’s degree in sports leadership from Concordia University at Chicago, where he is currently pursuing a doctorate in business administration.
