CENTRAL, SC (courtesy swu.edu) — Going against a long-standing national trend, Southern Wesleyan University has announced that it will not increase tuition during the 2019-2020 academic year.
As institutions of higher learning across the nation are faced with the need to raise their tuition, Southern Wesleyan University’s President, Dr. Todd Voss, acknowledges that rising costs and concern over growing student loan debt is a “major national conversation.” In light of the challenges this situation creates for students, Voss asserts that SWU must hold the line on current tuition levels to combat rising costs and put students first.
“Students today are faced with far tougher economic choices than ever before. Since 1906, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to provide both exceptional quality and affordable access. We are proud that this approach has made SWU a recognized value leader in Christian higher education. Our faith and our students come first. And so SWU has committed to no tuition rate increases for the 2019-2020 academic year to provide even greater access to the benefits of a SWU education for even more families. Along with our generous scholarships and grants, we are dedicated to accessibility and affordability for our students and their families,” Voss said.
“While one university holding the line on tuition cost will not have a big impact on a national trend, we hope that it will have a big and lasting impact on our students and our community,” said Sue Rickman, board chair. “I also think it sends a strong message that Southern Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the administration’s recommendation to hold tuition at current levels for the upcoming year. This move reflects the board’s continued desire and commitment to do what is in the best interest of our students and the university as a whole.”
