Southern Wesleyan University announces new Director of Choral Activities

November 17, 2023 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

CENTRAL, S.C. (courtesy swu.edu) — SWU is pleased to announce Dr. Samuel Miller as the new Director of Choral Activities. Dr. Miller currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Music at SWU.

His choral work has included preparing choirs for divisional and national ACDA conferences, Kentucky and Georgia Music Educators Association conferences, an Intercollegiate Male Chorus seminar, and large-scale works by Berlioz, Brahms, Rutter, and others. His previous positions include Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Kennesaw State University, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Kennesaw State University Community and Alumni Choir, Director of Choral Activities at LaGrange College, and more.

The Fine Arts Department said, “The SWU Music Department is thrilled to have Dr. Samuel Miller as our new Director of Choral Activities! Please make plans to join us for the first concert choir performance under his leadership on November 16, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. He brings many years of choral education experience and a heart for sharing God’s Word through music.”

Dr. Miller recently conducted the KSU Chamber Singers in performing Holocaust memorial music for the album Fugitive Footsteps. He has also contributed to a collegiate textbook on working with disabled students in the music education classroom. Dr. Miller serves on the Csehy Summer School of Music faculty, teaching middle school choir and voice.

He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education and has served in leadership roles in state chapters of both organizations. He is an adjudicator and clinician for GMEA, ACSI, and GAPPS.

Dr. Miller and his wife Jennifer have been married for 20 years and have two children, Nathan and Edie. Nathan plays soccer and is learning to play the trumpet. Edie is an artist and loves spending time with her friends and laughing.

Southern Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered, student-focused, faith-filled community that offers inventive learning experiences. The university endeavors to prepare its students to be dedicated scholars and servant-leaders who impact the world for Christ. For details about degree programs, go online to swu.edu.
