COLUMBIA, S.C. — SCICU Life Trustee Minor Mickel Shaw, a lifelong supporter of independent higher education, was the keynote speaker for SCICU’s Oct. 13 board luncheon.
“The value of independent higher education became clear to me early on, as my college education included Randolph Macon College in Virginia,” said Shaw. “My leadership roles and experiences with a wide range of independent colleges and universities underscore the importance of needs-based aid programs, especially the South Carolina Tuition Grants program. It is wonderful seeing students like Jonathan Wright (2022 SCICU Student of the Year) excelling in the classroom and the community.”
Shaw and her family have supported SCICU and its member institutions for almost all of SCICU’s nearly 70 years of independent higher education advocacy. That dedication was celebrated last spring when SCICU nominated Shaw for and the Council of Independent College’s (CIC) awarded her the Charles W. L. Foreman Award, the highest CIC national honor given annually for distinguished service to independent higher education.
Shaw chaired the SCICU board of trustees 1995-1997 and was recognized as a life trustee in 2011 for her 14 years of service on the SCICU board.
The Daniel-Mickel Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Minor’s family which she oversees, has contributed more than $1.7 million to SCICU programs over the last 56 years.
Shaw has chaired the Wofford College Board of Trustees and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. She has advised Furman University’s Riley Institute and Presbyterian College’s School of Pharmacy. Furman, Wofford, Francis Marion University, and Clemson University have all awarded honorary degrees to Shaw.
Shaw, president of Micco, LLC, a Greenville-based private investment and real estate development company, currently chairs the Duke Endowment and the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission. Shaw’s past chair leadership includes the Community Foundation of Greenville, the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, the Junior League of Greenville, the Urban League of the Upstate, the YMCA of Greenville, and the S.C. ETV Endowment.
