SCICU launches 2021 Infographics Series for Statehouse advocacy

March 15, 2021 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Beginning with the 2021 session of the South Carolina General Assembly, SCICU is expanding its state advocacy efforts to include issue/topic-focused infographics delivered regularly and directly to state Representatives and Senators.

“After reviewing the advocacy efforts of other state’s higher education organizations like SCICU, we decided to develop and launch a data-driven infographics series for S.C. Representatives and Senators,” said SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez. “We hand-delivered infographics early in the 2020 session, but moved to email infographics in the 2021 session, as a COVID-19 precaution.”

Infographics sent to S.C. Representatives and Senators are available for viewing on the SCICU website. Links to infographics emailed to members of the General Assembly in 2021 include:

February 3 – 20 member colleges and universities – Representing more than 33,000 students.
Seventy percent of SCICU undergraduate students are South Carolina residents.

February 11 – S.C. Tuition Grants make college affordable for SCICU students living in EVERY S.C. House and Senate District
A geolocation analysis shows that every S.C. House and Senate District is represented in the 12,000 students who receive S.C. Tuition Grants.

February 17 – SCICU salutes the students, faculty, and staff at our five HBCU member colleges and universities
SCICU recognizes and celebrates the achievements of Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and Voorhees College.

March 3 – SCICU student best explains the importance of S.C. Tuition Grants
Zy’Keria Moultrie, a Columbia College junior nursing major, explained during the Commission on Higher Education’s February 17 needs-based news conference that “S.C. Tuition Grants allow me to focus on my future plans and worry less now about funding for college.”

March 17 – SCICU students are writing thousands of Tuition Grants thank-you letters
“Every year our students write thousands of thank-you letters to S.C. legislators to express their appreciation for the Tuition Grants Program. For so many students a Tuition Grant helps them realize the dream of a college education.”

“Response to the SCICU 2021 infographics series has been very positive,” said Perez. “We are also sending the infographics to our board members and other higher education stakeholders in South Carolina.
