SCICU campuses tell Congress: ‘It’s time to #DoublePell!’

November 22, 2021 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

SCICU campuses tell Congress: 'It's time to #DoublePell!'COLUMBIA, S.C. — With its successful five-week Twitter campaign, SCICU and its member institutions’ communications officers and campus legislative advocates joined the groundswell of support for significantly increasing Pell Grant funding, which provides federal financial support for the most economically disadvantaged students.

SCICU and its member campuses joined the national campaign championed by the Double Pell Alliance, a coalition of higher education associations, organizations, and advocacy groups committed to doubling the maximum Pell Grant by the 50th anniversary of the creation of the program in June 2022.

“Every voice matters to impress upon Congress the need to increase Pell Grant funding,” said SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez. “Our campus partners joined us in a social media campaign that reached across South Carolina and the entire nation.”

In early October, SCICU collaborated with communications officers and campus legislative advocates in development of a five-week coordinated plan to amplify support of the national #DoublePell message through Twitter messages aimed towards the S.C. Congressional Delegation. The campaign resulted in more than 35,000 Twitter impressions.

RW Jones, the national education strategic communications firm supporting the #DoublePell campaign, congratulated SCICU and member campuses on a job well done.

“SCICU appreciates greatly the continued collaborative advocacy with our campus partners,” said Shay West, SCICU director of communications. “Our #DoublePell campaign would not have been so successful without their expertise and creative contributions. This type of collaborative social media initiative will be an integral component of SCICU’s future advocacy outreach efforts.”
