South Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities mourns the loss of former President & CEO Mike LeFever who died earlier this week. LeFever served for more than a decade as President & CEO of SCICU before serving as interim executive director at the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education in 2019. During his time at SCICU, Mike was a staunch advocate for the higher education community, promoting funding and resources for independent higher education and its students while strengthening the relationship among the higher education community.
Mike devoted his 40-year career to public policy and service. During his tenure, Mike held multiple leadership roles in state government, directing four different state agencies, and served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Executive Office Programs and Cabinet Affairs for then-Governor Jim Hodges. Because of his commitment to this work, Mike was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, and acknowledged by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2018.
“Mike led SCICU with integrity and vision for many years,” said Robert Lloyd, President & CEO of SCICU. His steadfast commitment to independent higher education strengthened our institutions and inspired those who worked alongside him. His legacy continues to guide our work today.”
As a graduate of SCICU institution Presbyterian College, Mike knew the value of an independent higher education degree. Upon his retirement, he reflected in a letter to SCICU member institutions and constituents: ‘As a graduate of one of South Carolina’s independent colleges, it has been my honor and privilege to have worked with SCICU and our 20 distinct and diverse institutions of higher learning for almost 11 years. I believe strongly in the liberal arts and the transformative nature of a comprehensive education at a private non-profit college.’ His words remain a powerful reminder of the enduring value of independent higher education and the lasting impact of his leadership.
We are forever thankful for his contributions and advocacy for higher education in South Carolina and our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and loved ones.
