COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) is pleased to announce that the Milliken & Company Charitable Foundation will award $10,000 in scholarships to SCICU’s five historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) beginning in fall 2022.
The Milliken grant will provide five $2,000 scholarships – one per institution – to STEM majors at Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and Voorhees University. Prospective recipients must be South Carolina residents with demonstrated financial need, be enrolled full-time, and have a 2.5 or higher GPA.
“We are extremely grateful for Milliken’s long-standing and generous support of students at SCICU’s member colleges and universities,” said Jeff Perez, SCICU president and CEO. “In 1953 SCICU started advocating on behalf of independent higher education in South Carolina, and Milliken has partnered with us since 1956. Over the years Milliken’s support of SCICU has totaled more than $4.1 million.”
In 1995, Milliken & Company, provided $25,000 in seed money for starting the SCICU Undergraduate Student/Faculty Research Program.
Milliken will again host the SCICU Undergraduate Student/Faculty Research Symposium at their Spartanburg, S.C. corporate headquarters on February 16, 2023. The annual research symposium culminates more than six months of student research and gives students a professional forum for the presentation of project findings.
