It’s all in the family at SWU – Mom finishing SWU’s Ed.D. program while daughter begins freshman year

August 15, 2021 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

CENTRAL, S.C. (courtesy swu.edu) — As Rhonda Gregory prepares to graduate from SWU’s Ed.D program this fall, her daughter Ashlyn will be stepping on campus as a freshman. While many family members may share the same alma mater, few have the opportunity to experience life as a student together. For the Gregory family, SWU is the perfect fit for both mom and daughter.

Rhonda entered the Doctoral program as a first-time SWU student, “Though I always knew SWU existed here in Central, S.C., I first really paid attention to SWU when I received an email recruitment for the university’s first ever doctoral program in Curriculum and Assessment. After enrolling in spring of 2018, I have been all in at SWU.” Her positive experience with professors truly living out the “Christian ethic of care” throughout the program led her to believe that SWU would also be a great fit for her daughter.

Ashlyn echoed her mom’s sentiment, “I chose SWU because I felt at home and I felt welcome here. Every single person that talked to me really seemed to care about me before they even knew me. It was small enough that I feel like I can really be a part of it, and I feel that I will be taken care of here.” She looks forward to the fall and all the new experiences that a transition to college will bring.

As Rhonda’s time at SWU comes to an end, she reflected back on the impact of her professors, “Every single professor I’ve had has been wonderful! I can truly say that all have impacted me in some way; however, Dr. Shotsberger has been the rock! He knows just when to push, when to give space, and when to call and arrange for a meeting that involves coffee (the coffee is definitely for him) so that he can be sure I am staying on top of all the things.” Rhonda will be a part of SWU’s first Ed.D graduating class in December 2021.
