Furman University education alumna Melissa Wells receives Virginia’s highest faculty honor

GREENVILLE, S.C. (courtesy furman.edu) — Furman University education alumna Melissa Summer Wells ’09 M’10, an associate professor of education at the University of Mary Washington, has received the 2024 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

The Outstanding Faculty Awards represent the Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities and recognize superior accomplishments in teaching, research and public service. Wells holds a doctorate in language and literacy from the University of South Carolina, a master’s in early childhood education and a bachelor’s in elementary education and music, the latter two from Furman University.
