Erskine College in early construction phase for new soccer field honoring Coach Ralph Lundy

May 16, 2024 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

DUE WEST, S.C. (courtesy erskine.edu) — A new Erskine College soccer field to be named for former Erskine soccer Coach Ralph Lundy is now in the early stages of construction, Vice President for Athletics Ralph Patterson reports.

Erskine President Dr. Steve Adamson is enthusiastic about the project. “You may have noticed several earthmoving trucks on campus near the women’s softball field,” he said in a recent message to students, faculty, and staff members. “This is the first stage of an exciting new project that will benefit Erskine students for years to come.”

“We are happy about creating a new soccer venue that will help our student-athletes and coaches achieve great things,” Patterson says. “Naming our new soccer venue for Ralph Lundy is appropriate and is a great way to bring together people who love Erskine.”

Lundy coached Erskine’s men’s soccer teams from 1976 to 1986. He was named South Carolina’s Coach of the Year three times and had 10 winning seasons while with the Flying Fleet, winning seven district titles and making three NAIA National Tournament appearances. Outside of the collegiate game, Lundy, a community leader, served as an assistant on the USA 17 and under team on two occasions and played a major role in the development of youth soccer in South Carolina, as proven by his induction into the South Carolina Youth Soccer Hall of Fame in 1991.

“Erskine has a great tradition in both men’s and women’s soccer,” Patterson says. “Ralph Lundy created winning programs that Erskine alumni and friends remember with pride, and building this new field will give our new soccer coaches a chance to recruit higher caliber student athletes so that we can return to having elite soccer programs.”
