Columbia College researchers present at the 2023 International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education

September 22, 2023 by SC Independent Colleges & Universities

COLUMBIA, S.C. (courtesy columbiasc.edu) — Associate Professor of Business and Chair of the Undergraduate Business program at Columbia College, Dr. Carole Sox, and her colleague, Dr. Sheryl Kline, Deputy Dean and Aramark Chaired Professor at the University of Delaware, presented a workshop at the 2023 International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) in Phoenix, Arizona. ICHRIE is a multi-cultural community of hospitality and tourism professionals whose mission is “dedicated to the pursuit, discovery, advancement, and sharing of knowledge and experiences relevant to the hospitality and tourism industry and its future leaders.”

Dr. Sox and Dr. Kline’s workshop, “Employing the Delphi Technique to Engage a Small Group of Subject Experts,” was presented to a global audience of Hospitality and Tourism researchers and educators. Their presentation centered on using the Delphi technique, a research approach focused on a group communication process which addresses multi-faceted issues in an attempt to gain common consensus. The method highlights the importance of surveying, compiling, and sharing the expertise of others as a means of answering a research dilemma.

In recent years, students within the Hospitality, Tourism, and Event Management concentration, as part of the Business Administration program at Columbia College, have secured exciting internships with companies throughout the state, including the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Woodlands Country Club, Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center, South Carolina State House, Homegrown Hospitality Group and the Columbia Fireflies, plus many others.
