COLUMBIA, S.C. (courtesy columbiasc.edu) — Columbia College Athletics is excited to announce Leighann Newberry as head softball coach

Hailing from Lizella, Georgia, Newberry played collegiate softball for Gordon College and Brewton-Parker College. While playing, she received All-Academic honors each of her four years. Newberry also received NAIA Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2011 and was a finalist in the SSAC Golden Glove Award in 2012. She graduated from Brewton Parker College in 2012, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports and Fitness and a minor in Coaching.

Newberry has spent the last nine years coaching softball at Georgia independent/private high schools. She began her career at Robert Toombs Christian Academy where she spent three years teaching high school math and coaching softball, basketball, tennis, and track. For the last six years, she served as Windsor Academy’s athletic director, high school math and science teacher, and coached softball, basketball, and track. During her tenure at Windsor Academy, she won three state championships and received coach of the year honors three times from the Georgia Independent Schools Association.
