ORANGEBURG, S.C. (courtesy Claflin University Facebook page) — On Nov. 7 Claflin University alumnus Reggie Burgess resoundingly defeated nine candidates to become the first Black person elected as mayor of North Charleston. Burgess joined the North Charleston Police Department in 1989 and rose through the ranks to be appointed police chief in 2018.
