South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) is proud to announce Caleb Erkens as the 2025 McLean-Smith SCICU Student of the Year. This prestigious scholarship honors the legacy of J. Lacy McLean, SCICU’s first president, and Sterling L. Smith, who served as Executive Vice President for 29 years. Both men played key roles in establishing the South Carolina Tuition Grants Program, and the scholarship recognizes students who exemplify leadership, academic excellence, and service in higher education.
Caleb, a senior actuarial science major at Bob Jones University, has consistently earned a place on the President’s List while taking on leadership roles on campus. He organizes calculus study groups, directs the actuarial science club, and guides peers on statistical analysis projects for a local healthcare client. In 2023, he was named a National Merit Finalist and a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Caleb is also the recipient of the Chick-fil-A Remarkable Futures Scholarship (2023–2025), recognized for his leadership and service as a designated trainer at Chick-fil-A Cherrydale Point.
Beyond academics, Caleb demonstrates a strong commitment to service. He volunteers with the Christian Learning Center, tutors homeschool students in Mandarin Chinese, and actively participates in his church community. Looking ahead, Caleb plans to pursue a master’s degree in applied statistics, aiming to help businesses manage financial risks and support economic stability through practical, data-driven strategies.
“It’s such an honor to be here today and to receive the McLean-Smith Student of the Year Award,” Caleb said. “I want to thank the faculty at Bob Jones University who have challenged me and encouraged me to grow academically and personally. I want to especially thank my family for their support and encouragement along the way.”
SCICU congratulates Caleb on this outstanding achievement and celebrates his dedication to leadership, service, and academic excellence.
