ANDERSON, SC (courtesy auministry.com) -– Pastor and author Bryan Chapell will be the featured speaker for the seventh annual John A. Broadus Lectures on Preaching at Anderson University October 24-25. His theme for the lectures will be “When Law Meets Grace: The Challenge of Application.” The annual lecture series is sponsored by the Clamp Divinity School.
Lectures will be presented on Tuesday, October 24 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm, and Wednesday, October 25 at 2:00 pm. Sessions will be held in the Student Center Theater on the Anderson University campus. Chapell will also preach in campus worship on Wednesday at 10:10 am in the Henderson Auditorium. All sessions are free and open to the public.
Chapell – who served from 1994 to 2012 as President of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis – is now the Senior Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria, Illinois. A professor of preaching for many years, his book Christ-Centered Preaching is now a standard text in many college and seminary classrooms. He has been pastor of several churches in Missouri and Illinois, and also served as President of Christ College in Taiwan.
The Broadus Lectures on Preaching are named in honor of John A. Broadus, who was one of the four founding faculty members in 1859 of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Greenville, South Carolina; the seminary moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1877. He served as professor of preaching and later President of the seminary. His classic book, On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons, was written while teaching in Greenville and was the nation’s preeminent text on the subject for the next century.
“Broadus was the father of modern expository preaching, and today’s great evangelical preachers are his legacy,” explains Michael Duduit, dean of the Clamp Divinity School and executive editor of Preaching magazine. “We are blessed to be able to claim this important part of South Carolina’s Christian heritage through recognizing the Broadus name in connection with this significant annual lectureship.”
Previous presenters of the Broadus Lectures include Rick Warren, Haddon Robinson, Ralph Douglas West, James Emery White and others.
