Dr. Melanie Rowell
Associate Professor of Music, Southern Wesleyan University
Dr. Melanie Rowell is an outstanding exemplar of a particularly important type of professor. Dr. Rowell has strong credentials as a soloist and as a principal in musical theater and opera. Her scholarly work at the University of Georgia demonstrates deep knowledge of her field and skill in research and interpretation. But it is in the crucible of close, personal interaction with students that Dr. Rowell truly demonstrates her excellence as a faculty member.
Whether it is through long hours of work in her studio with students desiring to improve their singing ability or working closely with the cast of one of the school musical productions, Professor Rowell leaves her mark. Her gentle spirit, deep commitments, and passion for excellence in both music and life influence and shape those with whom she works. Not only do students benefit educationally, but they become better people because of time spent with her.
According to Professor Jane Dill, Chair of the Fine Arts Division, “Dr. Rowell has been a tremendous asset to the Music Department at Southern Wesleyan. She has a desire for excellence in all she does, a concern for each student that goes well beyond what is expected, the ability to produce and direct an outstanding spring musical each year, and a commitment to growth in her own life—spiritually, academically, and musically. Melanie is an accomplished soloist and recitalist, and maintains an active performance schedule. Melanie Rowell is an example of what we want all college professors to be."
